Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey is currently seeking a Staff Accountant to work with our corporate team in Burlington, NJ.

General Responsibilities

Review the timing, accuracy, and appropriateness of all accounting transaction that are processed into the accounting software in order to prepare monthly financial statements. Obtain management information and research business transactions as necessary to ensure accurate and timely accounting of transactions.

Essential Duties

  1. Review all transactions that are processed into the general ledger.

  2. Ensure that all necessary transactions are processed and recorded into the general ledger. Prepare month-end close workpapers for LSMNJ business units.

  3. Assure proper supporting documentation and managerial authorization of all accounting transactions entered into the general ledger.

  4. Perform general ledger account analyses.

  5. Perform research of business transactions as necessary.

  6. Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements to management for review.

  7. Prepare monthly financial statement variance explanations for the Accounting Supervisor.

  8. Prepare monthly and quarterly grant reports for LSMNJ Community Programs. Ensure that appropriate management signatures are obtained prior to submission to third parties.

  9. Ensure that all credit card expense reports are submitted in a timely manner by the cardholders and approved by management. Record monthly credit card expenditures.

  10. Record and reconcile all contributions received through the Lutheran Foundation of New Jersey.

  11. Assists in the accounts payable process of mailing vendor’s payments with supporting documentation as required.

  12. Participate in the preparation of the annual operating plan and community programs budgets.

  13. Participate in the preparation of annual audits by independent public accountants.

  14. Complete surveys and other external data requests, as necessary.

  15. Completes annual compliance and HIPAA training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the LSMNJ Code of Ethics and Business Integrity in the performance of duties.

  16. Adheres to the Organization’s Policies and Procedures regarding the Compliance Program of the organization and is timely in reporting any possible concerns.

  17. Follows all local, state and federal regulations as they pertain to the position.

  18. Adheres to the Organization’s Policies and Procedures covering Privacy and Security in Compliance with HIPAA regulations.

  19. Other duties as assigned by supervisor, necessary for the efficient operation of the department/facility.

Experience and Skills:

Education/Training/Certifications:

High school degree and significant college required. College degree preferred.

Skill(s): Intermediate EXCEL. Effective use of complex, automated, integrated accounting and administrative software. Effective use of the Internet.

Familiar with managing general ledger accounts and basic financial statements.

Excellent oral and verbal communication. Confidential.

Self-assured; Self-motivated; Works quickly.

Able to do independent research of accounting transactions.

Pleasant, team-spirited telephone and interpersonal relations.

Experience: Two to five years of experience in all aspects of general accounting in a medium sized organization. Preparation of general ledger journal entries and general ledger account analyses. Participate in closing the general ledger and preparation of financial statements.
